Another New Texan

Please don’t ask me where I’m from… but yes, it is California 🙂

Exactly one year ago this weekend (Memorial Day weekend 2019), we jumped on a last-minute flight from San Jose, CA to Austin, TX. On a whim, my then fiance, now husband, and I were expecting to have a little fun and escape the craziness that can be the Bay Area.

Unspringlsingly, we had an amazing weekend – exploring Rainey, floating the river, eating at Loro, going out on Sixth Street, taking in the sights at Waco, catching up with old friends – it was pretty fantastic!

The surprising part (at least to us) was how much we immediately fell in love with the city. So much so, I was able to talk my husband (a man with a deep-rooted love for routines) into diverting our upcoming moving plans.

Four months before a big move we’d been planning for years, we decided to switch it up. San Diego could wait. It was the right time to give Austin a shot!

The slew of decisions we made last summer was exhilarating yet slightly terrifying. June 2019, we finalized our decision to move to Austin. July 2019, we got married. September 2019, we packed up everything we owned in a Budget truck and made the cross-country trip.

And boy, has it been a crazy year. All of the plans we thought we had were turned on their head. And this was all before Covid hit.

But, I’m immensely grateful for the decision we made a year ago. Because of our move, I’ve had the opportunity to go back to school. We rescued our adorable pup from the Austin Animal Shelter. And, we’ve met some amazing people along the way. Austin is becoming home.

As an old boss used to say, life always has more imagination than we do and I could not be more grateful for the past 52 weeks of planned and unplanned adventures.

So, cheers to the unexpected, unforeseen, happenstance, perfectly imperfect moments that keep us on our toes and sitting at the edge of our seats. And, thank you Austin, for welcoming us and providing us with an amazing new city to call home!
